PAN DENOUNCES ESCALATING POLITICAL VIOLENCE IN ZAMBIA
2 July 2026
LUSAKA, ZAMBIA – The Paralegal Alliance Network (PAN) Zambia strongly condemns the
rising incidents of political violence in the country and calls for immediate, decisive action
from law enforcement officials and political leaders to safeguard peace and human rights.
We are particularly saddened by the loss of life in Mazabuka and Kaputa districts as a result
of political violence. As a consortium dedicated to access to justice, human rights, and the
rule of law, PAN views the recent surge in politically motivated clashes with deep concern.
Political violence fundamentally undermines the democratic fabric of Zambia, restricts civic
space, and instils fear in ordinary citizens, particularly vulnerable groups who rely on a
peaceful environment to access justice and social services.
Violence has no place in Zambia’s democratic dispensation. Political differences must be
resolved through peaceful dialogue, mutual tolerance, and established legal channels rather
than physical confrontations or intimidation.
PAN urgently demands the following actions:
– To the Zambia Police Service: We call for the immediate, impartial, and thorough
investigation of all perpetrators of political violence, regardless of their political
affiliation. Law enforcement must act professionally and apply the law equally to
restore public confidence.
– To Political Party Leaders: We urge leaders across the political spectrum to publicly
denounce violence, restrain their youth wings, and actively promote a culture of
peace and tolerance among their supporters.
– To the General Public and Civil Society: We encourage all citizens to reject political
manipulation and violence, and instead champion peace, unity, and respect for
human rights.
PAN remains committed to promoting a just and peaceful society where the rights of all
Zambians are protected. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and support
legal frameworks that ensure accountability and justice for all victims of political violence.
